FAQ
How do I begin the appraisal process?
We ask clients to begin by sending clear photographs of the painting or calligraphy. Useful images include the full work, signatures, seals, inscriptions, mounting details, and any labels or related documentation. These materials allow us to make an initial assessment and advise on the most appropriate next step.
Can you help me better understand a painting I own?
Yes. Many inquiries begin with a desire to better understand a work’s nature, context, and potential significance. After reviewing photographs and any accompanying information, we can advise whether further research, closer examination, or a formal appraisal would be appropriate.
Why do you require photographs first?
Photographs allow us to evaluate the work preliminarily before recommending the next stage of the process. This helps determine whether the matter can proceed through documentation and research alone or whether an in-person examination may be warranted.
What types of appraisals do you provide?
We provide USPAP-compliant appraisal services for Chinese painting and calligraphy, including insurance appraisals, estate appraisals, charitable contribution and museum donation appraisals, as well as other fair market value assessments.
Where are you based?
We are based in the New York region. Visits outside the city or outside the state can also be arranged in advance, depending on the needs of the engagement.
Do you offer in-person examination?
Yes. When appropriate, in-person examination can be arranged after an initial review of photographs and supporting information.
